Doctors on call

The UK government has backed the concept of research centres of excellence by announcing more than 90 new Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs) spread across 24 leading UK universities and funded through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) with support from business and industry. The new centres were announced in a batch of 72 at the end of November with a further 19 last month by universities minister David Willetts. The funding runs for five years and the aim is to bring through up to 1,000 PhDs a year in areas of science and engineering that have been identified as having growth potential and possible commercial opportunities.
