摘要

Imperial College London is opening a £6 million research centre to investigate mining technology. The centre is a partnership with mining firm Rio Tinto and will develop new exploration and extraction methods Minerals used to produce valuable metals such as copper, used in electrical wiring, or nickel, used to make stainless steel, are getting harder to find and recover using traditional methods. Extracting them from deeper underground is becoming an important focus for mining research. Lead scientist Professor Jan Cilliers said: "If we found copper close to a major city tomorrow then the associated environmental and social concerns would make it impossible for us to mine. Our research could make this a reality without adverse effects on the environment."
