Battling food waste is no longer the preserve of western countries after a Chinese online anti-food-waste campaign, launched in April 2012, received the backing of the Chinese Communist Party's new leader Xi Jinping. Xu Zhijun launched "Operation Empty Plate" after learning that the food wasted by Chinese university students could feed 10 million people a year. He was also shocked to see how much food people would leave on their plates in restaurants. He therefore started his campaign by posting a photo of his empty plate and urged others to do the same.
