The EU is expected to ban three of the substances used to soften plastics - phthalates - permanently from all children's toys because they are toxic to reproduction - or 'reprotoxic.' Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and butylbenzyl phthalate (BBP) are currently outlawed from toys intended or likely to be placed in the mouths of children under three through a series of temporary bans that have come one after the other since 1999. The current ban runs until August.
