Waste simplification measures to come in 2006

Waste legislation is to be one of the first sectors to reviewed in the European Commission's drive for simplification of European legislation. This could bring more use of voluntary agreements and industry standards as opposed to legislation. The Commission unveiled its work programme for the next three years on 25 October, outlining the specific legislation that it is proposing to look at -and in which order - as part of its drive to modernise regulation and cut red tape. The process is part of the Commission's Lisbon programme to increase Europe's competitiveness.
