EU should save energy, secure supply, says energy chief

The EU should get serious about saving energy, increasing its use of alternatives to fossil fuels and developing new technologies, European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said this month. But, he added, the bloc should also launch into new initiatives to ensure it had adequate fossil fuel supplies. Fleshing out the priorities of his mandate in Brussels, the energy chief said 2005 would see the Commission launching into a "major European energy efficiency initiative, combining cost-effective action at all levels."
