Following the endorsement by the European Parliament of the new European Trade Commissioner this week, two MEPs have called on her to distance herself from her predecessor's close relationship with big business. The nomination of Baroness Catherine Ashton as the new EU trade Commissioner was approved byrnMEPs on 22 October with 538 votes in favour, 40 against and 63 abstentions. Reacting to the announcement, Swedish left winger Jens Holm and UK Green MEP Caroline Lucas welcomed Baroness Ashton in her new post but encouraged her to "move on from the pro-corporate policies of Peter Mandelson". In an open letter to the new Commissioner, Mr Holm said he hoped "we will be able to collaborate successfully, especially on environmental and global justice issues".
