France to halve pesticide use

French agriculture minister Michel Barnier this month presented an ambitious plan to cut the national farming industry's use of pesticides by 50 per cent, within ten years "if possible" - a target set by last year's Environment Summit. Known as 'Ecophyto 2018,' the plan was developed in consultation with pesticide users, manufacturers, members of parliament, scientists and nongovernmental organisations. It aims to reduce farms' dependence on pesticides while maintaining a high level of agricultural production, Agrisalon reports.
