France is to develop a new plan for halving usage of pesticides in the country even as the original plan launched in 2008 has been deemed a failure. The original plan, dubbed Ecophyto 2018, under the government’s environmental initiative, Grenelle de l’Environment, was to have halved pesticide usage by 2018. Six years after its launch, the plan has not delivered the expected results, says a Parliamentary report. Usage has, in fact, increased, the study reveals. Agrochemical use went up by 9% over the previous year in 2013 and by 5% on average between 2009 and 2013. The increase has been driven by a rise in the use of herbicides and fungicides, even as insecticide use has gone down.
