Industry calls for voluntary food ecolabel, NGOs say it should be third party tested

The European food industry, which lobbied against a food ecolabel when the original EU ecolabel came out some 16 years ago, is pleased that the ecolabel will remain voluntary. Green and consumer groups including the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and the European Consumers' Organisation (BEUC) say that to be effective the ecolabel, although voluntary, must be third party tested -which they claim the European Commission has hinted might now not be necessary.
