MEPs support EU's 20 per cent CO_2 cutting target, but conflict on carbon trading

The European Commission target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent compared to 1990 levels should remain unchanged, if an international agreement is indeed reached on a post 2012 climate plan, a majority of MEPs said at the European Parliament Environment Committee this week. Several MEPs rejected Finnish Green MEP Satu Hassi's call to cut CO_2 emissions to 30 per cent (see EE & PL. June 20 2008, p25) before an international agreement was settled. The Commission has committed to adopt more ambitious goals at a later date - while Ms Hassi said that the 20 per cent target should only be a fallback option with no international agreement.
