Environment Council to consider GM approvals revamp

The 5 June Environment Council is to discuss the EU authorisation system for genetically modified organisms, particularly the way risk is assessed and the role of member states in the process. The current Slovenian Council presidency has bowed to pressure from the French, who take over at the EU helm on 1 July, and included the exchange of views as a full agenda item rather than under any other business. This means that ministers will be able to discuss the issues at length and can make recommendations and adopt conclusions, although the plan at the moment is simply for an exchange of views.
