Landfill drives action on packaging, says UK MP

The UK's focus on household packaging is largely due to the need to implement the landfill directive, Joan Ruddock, MP and minister for climate change, biodiversity and waste, told a British parliamentary inquiry on waste this week (see further stories this issue). "As part of the Waste Strategy adopted last November, we aim to reduce the 22.2 million tonnes of waste in the household sector to 12 million tonnes," she told the meeting on Tuesday. "Our concentration on household waste is driven by the directive on landfill." The UK has one of the highest levels of landfill in Europe. In 2006, 60 per cent of 35.5 million tonnes of municipal waste arisings went to landfill.
