Commission consults on 'other measures' to cut car CO_2 emissions

The European Commission is consulting on two of the crucial "other measures" designed to cut car carbon dioxide emissions, namely mobile air conditioning (MAC) systems and gear shift indicators. A consultation document says that air conditioning measures could come as an amendment to the existing MAC directive or a separate proposal. The tentative plan is to set minimum efficiency requirements against which vehicle compliance would be assessed at type approval. But the Commission acknowledges that air conditioning's contribution to overall car CO_2 emissions is low and that well defined ambient conditions for assessing MAC performance are complicated to establish.
