PLA could hamper PET recycling, says Petcore

Even less than 0.1 per cent of polylactide (PLA) -less than one bottle in 1,000 will make any recycled PET resin unsuitable for most applications, reducing PET's recycling value. That is the message of industry group PET container recycling Europe (Petcore), following a recent independent evaluation commissioned by the organisation. Petcore says that even small market penetrations will seriously hinder the recycling infrastructure for PET containers in the European Union. Some 40 billion bottles (one million tonnes) of PET are collected for recycling in the EU alone. Petcore says that input purity (which could be lessened by adding PLA), sorting and recycling technologies and high quality market outlets ensure this success.
