MEPs say that status quo on climate change is insufficient

Calling for additional research on the environmental impact of biofuels and warning that current policies are not ultimately enough to stop global warming, MEPs voted this week to adopt the interim report of the temporary climate change committee. The report on "the scientific facts of climate change" was drafted by German centre-right MEP Karl-Heinz Florenz and adopted by 36 votes in favour, four against and one abstention. It will now be voted on at the May plenary. According to the report, current research shows "the risk of serious impact on our planet if measures are not taken swiftly" to reduce CO_2 and other greenhouse gas emissions.
