MEPs call for congestion charges to cut transport problem

MEPs have backed the idea of applying congestion charges and road prices at EU level as they voted in favour of a report on sustainable EU transport in Strasbourg this week. The report by Italian centre right MEP Gabriele Albertini, which was adopted by 529 votes in favour and 78 against on 11 March, calls for more investment in technological innovation, better exploitation of existing infrastructure and new ways to optimise the use of private cars such as car sharing, car pooling and arrangements for working from home.
