Think tank criticises EU's biofuels targets

The Dutch environmental advisory body MNP has warned the European Parliament this week that EU plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions using biofuels will increase food prices and threaten biodiversity (see also top story). "Since existing techniques for biofuels are based on food crops such as grain, maize, sugar beet and palm oil, the EU biofuel target of ten per cent will lead to an increase in food prices," said the MNP report on the same day as the biofuels hearing (4 March).
