Commission says action on deposits a member state issue

The European Commission is not planning to carry out any more initiatives on deposit systems, following publication on its beverage can study published in March 2009. It says that collection systems are the responsibility of the member states. "They depend on national circumstances and as the directive is addressed to the member states, then it is up to the member states to set up the most appropriate instruments that are best suited to their local needs, consumption and distribution patterns," a Commission official told EE&PL.
