Eu Strikes Deal On Emas

The EU is close to getting a new-look eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS) after the European Commission, Council and MEPs this week clinched a deal on the shape that the revamped scheme should take. Critical to the agreement was the Commission and Council's acceptance of the use of "third party" bodies to verify company compliance with the EMAS requirements. This had been the Commission's intention in the proposal but MEPs from the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee had insisted that the words 'independent verifiers' were not explicit enough. The deal, struck this week, keeps everybody happy as it includes both terms.
