Revamped Report Backs Biotech Development

A controversial report on biotechnology has resurfaced in the European Parliament, two years after it was withdrawn from a plenary vote under pressure from MEPs. Shortened, simplified and reworded in a bid to achieve cross-party consensus, the new draft report entitled "Biotechnology: Prospects and Challenges for Agriculture in Europe" was presented to MEPs in the Agriculture Committee this week. Finnish Liberal MEP Kyosti Virrankoski, the rapporteur (draftsman) on the dossier, told the Committee that there is once again a strong mandate for an EU strategy to exploit the potential benefits of biotechnology, with Parliament requiring a united line to play a full role in the debate.
