The European Environmental Agency (EEA) has called on the European Commission to demand more information from EU member states on transboundary shipments of waste for disposal.rnThe Agency says a tightening of the rules on reporting of waste shipments is needed to evaluate their impact on the environment.rnIn its annual report "EEA signals 2009", published on 9 January, the EEA notes that some EU legislation, such as the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) directive and the packaging and packaging waste directive "encourages" the shipment of waste material for recycling to third countries. Yet because summarised waste shipment data submitted by member states to the Commission are so general, it makes an assessment of the environmental impacts of international waste shipments difficult.rnThe EEA says that despite legislation in place, "further evidence is required" as to how effective the legislation is in terms of "easing pressure on the environment."
