Without paying "immediate attention" to buildings, it will be impossible to reduce CO_2 emissions by 80-95 per cent by 2050 compared to 1990 levels, a group of representatives of the construction sector warned last week.rnIn a paper released on 13 July, the industry said that binding "energy renovation" targets for existing buildings should complement the strengthened requirements for new buildings set out in the recently recast energy performance of buildings Directive 2010/31/EC: "All renovations must ensure that the energy performance of the building after renovation is significantly better (up to 90 per cent better) than it was beforehand."
