CEPI scorns unrealistic national bio energy action plans

The European paper industry has slammed renewable energy plans of member states, for the unrealistic assumption that wood can cover a high proportion of their 2020 renewables target. According to the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), under "flawed" calculations, member states would require some "333 million m3 of wood extracted from European forests, more than twice the annual wood use of the entire European pulp and paper industry" to reach the binding target of 20 per cent renewable energy by 2020. CEPI Forest Director Bernard de Galembert therefore called on the European Commission last month to check the plans submitted and make sure that they were " realistically feasible". If not, he said that "the member states should be requested to amend them.
