Air conditioners and fans are going to have to comply with strict rules on energy use in future, after member states last week backed tough implementing measures under the ecodesign directive. The regulation that member states cleared on 31 May sets minimum requirements for the seasonal cooling and heating energy performance of domestic air-conditioners sold on the ELJ market, as well as on their sound level. Added to that, for the first time ever in a measure under the ecodesign directive, there is a bonus scheme to reward manufacturers using refrigerant fluids which have a low impact on global warming. Appliances using greener refrigerants such as hydrocarbons would be rewarded.
