Twelve states threatened with ECJ over green crime laws

A dozen member states were last week given two months to transpose EU laws laying down criminal penalties against sea pollution and other environmental offences or face legal action in the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The European Commission on 16 June warned ten countries over their failure to write Directive 2008/99/EC on criminal law measures to protect the environment into national law. The directive should have been transposed by 26 December 2010, but the ten have so far failed to do so and are Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal, Romania and Slovenia.
