Italy gets more time to make Naples waste-free

The European Commission has given Italy a two month extension on a recent deadline to get rid of the waste in Naples or face sanctions, Italians officials have announced. The original deadline, which expired on 30 November, had been set in late September when fire-fighters had to put out 13 waste bin fires in and around Naples. "They gave Naples a two-month extension," Italian Environment Minister Corrado Clini said on 2 December. "The time we have to convincingly intervene is very tight. Otherwise, there will be a colossal fine that we will all have to pay."
