New ecodesign report reveals forthcoming product categories

The European Commission has released a draft report revealing which products may soon be affected by EU environmental rules under the EU Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC). According to the Study for the Amended Ecodesign Working Plan products as varied as taps and showerheads, detergents, window products for buildings, thermal insulation or base station subsystems show "ample room for improvement on other aspects than energy", whether in terms of the presence of substances, critical raw materials or precious metals or the consumption of potable water or end-of life and resource management. The study identifies 20 products groups which should be assessed further for possible inclusion in the directive.
