Austria taken to ECJ over missing industrial permits

The Commission is referring Austria to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) over outdated permits for its industrial installations. Under European legislation, the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive, new permits should have been issued by 30 October 2007, the Commission explained in a 6 April statement. The IPPC directive also required member states by the same date to revise existing permits for all industrial installations that were in operation before 30 October 1999. But permits must only be issued if a number of environmental criteria are met.
