Commission pioneers mercury phase out

The European Commission is continuing its "pioneering work" on the phasing out of mercury and assessing whether further marketing restrictions are feasible, a Commission representative told MEPs last week. Speaking at the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety on 17 March, Christopher Allen from DG Environment said that the Commission was looking into the possibility of restricting the sale of back pressure equipment for hydraulic metering pumps as well as gathering information on alternatives to mercury in dental amalgams and button cell batteries, the "key uses of mercury that remain on the EU market".
