Austria: ARA collects more PMC packaging in 2010

Lightweight packaging collected in Austria grew by 2,700 tonnes or 2 per cent last year, according to recent estimates published by green dot scheme Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA). Austrian consumers sorted some 138,200 tonnes of (PMC) plastics, metals, beverage cartons and other composite packaging in 2010, up from 135,500 tonnes in 2009. Paper and board packaging collection was almost the same - with 589,500 tonnes collected instead of 593,300 tonnes collected in 2009. This decline over the 2008 figure was partly caused by the economic crisis, ARA said.
