GMO report sets Parliament and Commission on collision course

Member states should be allowed to opt out of genetically modified organism (GMO) cultivation for environmental as well as ethical reasons, according to the European Parliament's rapporteur on the contentious biotech dossier. French Liberal MEP Corinne Lepage released her draft report last week, putting forward substantial changes to the Commission's GMO cultivation proposals. The GMO package was launched by EU Health Commissioner John Dalli in July, as Brussels moved to give member states new flexibilities on cultivation in order to break the deadlock over new biotech approvals.
