Italy threatened with EU Court over landfill failings

Italy could be facing legal action in the EU Court of Justice if it does not up its game on landfills, both closing illegal dumps and bringing other sites up to standard, by the end of January. The European Commission said on 21 November it was sending Italy a reasoned opinion (the second stage in EU infringement proceedings), giving Rome two months to reply. In the absence of a satisfactory response, the Commission said it may refer Italy to the EU Court of Justice.
