Russia bans Monsanto's GM maize imports

Russia has suspended imports of genetically modified (GM) maize from US biotechnology firm Monsanto, while Ukraine's agriculture ministry has brought in measures to ensure that GM seeds are not being imported by local companies. The decisions by the respective governments follow last month's announcement that a study by the University of Caen in France found that rats fed Monsanto's NK603 maize or exposed to the company's Roundup weed killer were more likely to develop cancerous tumours or suffer from organ damage (seeEE&PL: September 26. 2012. pl3-15).
