EFSA green light for talc in polystyrene food packaging

Talc used to absorb liquids in polystyrene food packaging has had the green light from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EFSA's Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) said that provided migration limits set out in a 2011 EU regulation (10/2011) were respected, then "there is no safety concern for the consumer when used as liquid absorber in contact with fresh meat, poultry and fish."
