Former EPA official urges action to prevent US chemical disaster

Former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Christine Todd Whitman this month put her support behind a controversial proposal for EPA to use its authority under the Clean Air Act to require US chemical facilities to switch to safer alternatives. Whitman, who served under the Bush administration in the aftermath of the 11 September terrorist attacks, writes in a 3 April letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson that the agency should require changes "before a tragedy of historic proportions occurs." The letter was obtained by the Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit research organisation.
