It is still too early in the implementation of the REACH chemicals legislation to know its full costs or whether it has improved public health or the environment in the EU, but if policymakers choose to replicate it in the US, they would be wise to avoid problems encountered across the Atlantic and pursue a simplified version with "refinements and modifications" to the EU's five-year-old chemical management programme.
