Northern Ireland has announced that a plastic bag fee of 5 pence will be introduced in April 2013, which will increase to 10 pence in April 2014. According to Northern Irish Environment Minister Alex Attwood who announced the levy on 30 January, the lower charge in the first year would enable consumers to adjust to the concept. He said there will be no charge on multi use carrier bags in April 2013, but that the 10 pence levy will apply to these bags in 2014.
