Green group HEAL calls for REACH clampdown on PFCs after new study

The Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) is calling for regulators to use the REACH chemicals regulation to crackdown on perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), after a study showed that children exposed to high levels have a reduced response to common vaccines. In a 25 January statement, HEAL said that the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that day found that elevated exposures to PFCs in children are associated with reduced immune response to routine immunisations (tetanus and diphtheria) in children aged 5 and 7 years old. The study suggests that exposure to PFCs, before and after birth, may lower a child's ability to make disease-fighting antibodies for tetanus and diphtheria later in life.
