European Battery Recycling Association (EBRA) members recycled 10 per cent more waste batteries in 2012 than the previous year, with 38,600 tonnes. This includes all batteries and accumulators: rechargeable and non-rechargeable portable, industrial and automotive batteries with the exception of lead-acid batteries. According to EBRA, the EU battery directive, which requires member states to collect at least 25 per cent of used portable batteries from 2012, has "clearly helped increase the tonnage of spent batteries in Europe ready for recycling."
