EU discards ban comes closer after MEPs' vote

An EU ban on discards, where fish are thrown back, usually because they are of an unwanted species or size, mostly to die, is in the final furlong following a crucial vote in the European Parliament last week. The Council now has to clear the Common Fisheries Policy reform package containing the discards ban before it is adopted and published in the EU's Official Journal.
