MEP divisions lead to weaker climate and energy position

Calls for cuts in carbon dioxide emissions or for renewable energy or energy efficiency targets will now not see the light of day in the European Parliament's draft resolution on the climate and energy package, given the conflicting views from different MEPs. MEPs on Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) and Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committees were aiming to adopt a joint position on the 2030 package. As ENVI committee chair German Socialist Matthias Groote explained last month, a co-ordinated approach is needed to ensure that the two committees do not vote, as they have done in the past, in opposite directions.
