IEA calls for more energy efficiency measures

International Energy Agency (IEA) experts are calling on governments to increase energy efficiency measures in buildings. At the World Energy Congress in South Korea last week, Maria van der Hoeven, IEA executive director, said that energy efficiency should be viewed as the "world's first fuel," and that its benefits have been hidden away for too long. The IEA has published a new report that examines the size of the energy efficiency market as a supply option, in the same way as it would for renewable energy or fossil fuels. It found that investments in energy efficiency reached an estimated $300 billion in 2011, a figure similar in size to global investments in renewable energy and fossil fuel power generation.
