Following pressure from environmentalists, the Scottish government has announced its decision to introduce single use plastic bag charges across Scotland from next year. From October 2014, shoppers will have to pay at least 5p per bag. Retailers will be expected to donate the money made from the bag sales to charity after covering their costs. Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said on 28 June that it was vital to reduce the 750 million bags currently used in Scotland each year.
