Spain asked to reconsider rail link or face EU Court

Spain could be referred to the EU Court of Justice unless it reviews the impact of a planned rail link in Andalusia within the next two months, the European Commission warned on 20 June in sending a reasoned opinion. The Commission said in a statement that it was concerned that Spain had authorised the construction of the high-speed rail link project before properly assessing its effects on the environment, contrary to the requirements of EU legislation - notably the environmental impact assessment directive.
