EU agrees to ban dangerous substances in batteries

The EU is to ban cadmium in cordless power tools (CPT) and mercury in button cell batteries following a deal in trialogue talks between the Irish Council presidency, MEPs and the European Commission. The deal, which still needs formal clearance from the Council and European Parliament, will end two key remaining waivers from the 2006 batteries directive, namely nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries in cordless power tools, and mercury in button cell batteries. Other exemptions from the directive's ban on cadmium for batteries used in emergency and alarm systems and for medical equipment remain.
