UK looks to change WEEE system

The UK, through its Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), launched, on 17 April, a much anticipated consultation on the overhaul of the UK's waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) compliance system. Industry was quick to respond with a group of eight trade associations and four producer-led compliance schemes issuing a statement on 18 April backing the proposals to reduce costs in dealing with WEEE by matching up producer compliance schemes with collection sites. The UK's Joint Trade Associations (JTA), which represents more than 90 per cent of WEEE producer responsibility schemes in the UK, said the move would result in the "fairest cost" to WEEE stakeholders.
