MEPs divided over corporate social responsibility

Voting on two reports on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg last week, MEPs agreed that the EU needs a comprehensive framework on CSR, but appeared divided over whether or not the EU should legislate on the way businesses carry out their CSR programmes. The two own-initiative reports by Italian MEP Raffaele Baldassarre and British MEP Richard Howitt of the centre right European People's Party (EPP) are aimed at supporting European Commission proposals to foster the conditions for businesses to achieve sustainable growth and engage in ethical business practices.
