The US Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) has ramped up its effort to fend off mandatory labelling of genetically modified (GM) foods, forming a coalition with more than 25 prominent food, grower and biotechnology industry groups to press the issue with federal lawmakers and with the public. The members of the coalition have all thrown their support behind a legislative proposal drafted by the GMA that would require that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) set up voluntary labelling standards and preempt states from enacting their own labelling laws, Food Chemical News reports. News of the GMA proposal was leaked to the press last month.
