Pressure is on the food and beverage processing sector to curtail fossil fuel derived energy use, cut its carbon footprint and reduce its environmental impact. As food manufacturing companies assess how to make their operations more sustainable, Richard Gueterbock, director of British on-site anaerobic digestion specialist Clearfleau, tells how Nestle is leading the way - exploiting a valuable source of revenue to create renewable energy. Production residues from Fawdon, the former Rowntree factory (and home to the Rolo), were being discharged to sewer or fed to pigs in the locality, wasting a source of renewable energy.
